 APPEAL

It takes a village to raise a kid. Similarly, in a global village concept, Srimad Raghaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji of Ramachandrapur Math and Srimad Gangadharendra Saraswati Swamiji of Swarnavalli Math Sonda are working together hand in hand for the welfare of the Havyaka Community and in general for the uplift of the common man. They have been trying to harness the spirituality and personal development of the members of community. They have made awareness of Hindu religion to a common man through their lectures and writings. They are conducting Veda Patashalas, free hostels for Veda Patashala students, primary and high schools and a college. They are renovating several old temples in Karnataka. They have been bringing other Hindu religious maths on a common platform to address the common problems faced by the Hindus. They are leading the community in the 21st century with fast changing technology and social environment. The Havyakas were waiting for such a leadership since last centaury. The mission and vision of these two Havyka Swamijis have revitalized morale, enthusiasm and unquestionable courage of Havyakas settled all over the world.

The Havyakas in villages, cities such as Bangalore, Mangalore and Bombay have found unique leadership in these two Swamijis. I am proud to say that last year, Havyaka volunteers from Bangalore went from door to door of Havyaka homes and broke all previous records by collecting to the tune of a core (10 million rupees) of rupees for the missions of the Havyaka Maths.

The Havyakas in Americas, always took a voluntary lead in providing our moral and monetary support to all projects undertaken by swamijis/Mathas/Havyaka organizations in India since the beginning of the Havyaka associations of the Americas. You will find several projects undertaken by these two Swamijis in Havyaka Website. I suggest that each Havyaka pray at least once a day along with a family and should put at least 10 cents or more in a Piggy Box. Before the year-end, the family is welcome to add extra money in the Piggy Box on special auspicious occasions such as Birth Day, or marriage anniversary day etc. Then, each family can mail to the treasurer of the HAA requesting to transfer the money to the project of their choice or directly to the Havyaka Organizations in India. We can request our Havyaka Chapter youth leaders to follow up in raising the fund for the Maths.

I am sure that Havyakas in Americas also take a voluntary lead to raise fund for the missions undertaken by these two Swamijis.

Dear Havyakas,                                                                      Nov. 22, 2003

Appeals: Let us make a difference..during this Holiday Season!

It is that time of the calender year...!! We have just celebrated Deepavali Season..and are looking forward to a relaxing and Joyous "Holiday Season" . During any time of the year or holiday seasons, giving gifts or contributions to humanity could be fulfilling.

Accordingly, I have attached two appeals of opportunity. Both have a common theme: To support and enhance the contributions of our Havyaka heritage with the leadership of Shree Bharathi Swamiji of Ramachandrapur Math and Srimad Gangadharendra Saraswati Swamiji of Swarnavalli Math Sonda. Their efforts to unite our havyaka community is commendable. As an united havyaka community, Swamijis are demonstrating our capacity and interest to serve the society and humanity.

 (1) Youth Co-leader efforts in fund raising: Contributing small change on a regular basis (even 10 cents a day) by all can give a feeling of remembering the noble cause and needy people  far way! Thinking about the efforts of Swamijis and adding even 10 cents a day to an "Education Fund Box" can make a difference. This aspect is highlighted in the appeal by our former President of HAA, Mr. Ramachandra Bhat of Fairfax, VA. I strongly feel that this could be a great project for all chapter Youth and Co-leaders to take further initiatives/actions. I urge all havyakas to fully support our youth havyaka leaders efforts in the coming months and years!

 (2) Supporting Matta's Shree Bharathi Institute of Applied Sciences, Mangalore that educates free of cost any interested youngster in Computer Science as well as Veda, Yoga, Vedic Mathematics and Philosophy. This is another means of contributing towards Swamiji's efforts in instilling modern sciences as well as ancient sciences of our heritage not only to havyakas but also to any community students. In addition, there are several other institutions that are sponsored by Mattas as lisetd in the HAA web page (www.havyak.com)

All donations during the year (or accumulated through the daily contributions), can be sent to Sawmiji's Mattas  directly or through HAA. If it is through HAA, there could be an tax benefit depending on the tax status of the contributor. However, per the Charity-guidelines put forwarded and approved during the recent HAA convention of July 4th & 5th, 2003, HAA will donate 85% of the funds received by HAA. The remaining 15% of such funds can be donated within USA, (wherein HAA is a registered non-profit organization). Such donations could be to any charitable causes in USA including temples/yoga/spiritual/educational institutions.

Let us hope for a Joyous & Relaxing Holiday Season...! Let us extend our help towards educating the needy ones and make a difference in their life. After all..it is the education that made a difference in our life!

 Best Regards,

 "Bheem"

Sri Bharathi Vidyalaya - A School With a Difference

Education should not only inform but also transform.”

Long queues in front of prestigious schools during the season of admissions are a familiar sight in a city like Bangalore.  Parents often spend sleepless nights and run from pillar to post to get their children admitted into these elitist institutions. They cough up a few thousand rupees in the form of donation, building fund and books and then assume that they have done  the best for their children.  We need to look into the factors which are responsible for this craze for the so called convent education.

Today, most of the parents use the  yard stick of results and ranks to evaluate  a school  as good or bad.  If a school secures 100% results and churns out a few rank holders, there is a mad rush to admit the children there. Next criteria is the question of prestige - a school which is patronized   by the elite is considered a good school. The middle class parents who aspire to send their children to such schools forget that along  with the elite school comes the elite culture – which is mainly Western. The children imbibe a set of values and attitudes which remain with them for life. The culture of Coca-Cola, pop music and pocket money is hard to resist and when parents object to this type of consumerist culture, the children rebel. They often reject the ways and values of their parents as unfashionable. This leads to conflicts at home, especially when the children reach adolescence and dislike any kind of control.  The parents may wonder where they have gone wrong. The answer may be that they have failed to send their children to schools which are culturally akin to them.

             J. Krishnamurthy, the great philosopher of modern times in an essay titled

“ For the Young”, writes, “If we merely prepare ourselves to earn livelihood, we

shall miss the whole point of life: and to understand life is  much more important than

merely to prepare for examinations and become very proficient in mathematics,

physics or what you will. So, whether we are teachers or students, is it not important

to ask ourselves why we are educating or being educated?”

Sri Bharathi  Vidyalaya,  a new school  in  R. P. C. Lay out, Bangalore,  to be run under the aegis of  Sri Ramachandrapura Mata, Gokarna,  will be  an institution where  both   teachers and  students will  constantly ask themselves  such  questions about the  aim of education.  The school will not equate education with mere book learning and fact finding.  It will strive to develop in the child a capacity to think freely without fear, to think creatively without a formula.  The student will discover the joy of learning through experience and play, not through back breaking and tedious work. The child will learn to combine the wisdom of tradition with the skills of modernity. The school will make children proficient in both English and Kannada. A lot of emphasis will be laid on the all round development of the child. Noted artists and distinguished scholars will guide the teachers and children in activities which will bring out the  hidden potential and talents in them.

Academic excellence will be an important  aspect of  education in Bharathi Vidyalaya but it will not  be the only aim. The school will send out to the world children who are  physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong  to  take up  the challenges of  real life. Newspapers everyday report of youngsters who run   away from home because parents scold them or commit suicide if they fail in exams or love affairs. This lack of mental strength among the younger generation could be attributed to many   social and environmental factors  like   lack of proper parenting, the prevalence of nucleus families and working mothers  and most importantly the failure at home to  impart the  right  set of values to them. Under these circumstances, a school has to under take the responsibility of educating the youth to comphrend the complexities of life and cope with its vagaries.

Under the guidance of Srimadjagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Ragaveshwara Bharathi Swamiji, the school will impart value based education to children from all walks of life irrespective of caste, creed or class. Eternal values like love and compassion to humanity, service to mankind, sincerity, tolerance, promotion of peace and harmony will be inculcated   in the young minds. In a world torn by violence and terrorism, we have a responsibility to shape a generation which will learn to respect life and eschew violence as a weapon of social and political change.

Sri Bharathi Vidyalaya will commence its noble work from June, 2002, in its own spacious building at R. P. C. Layout , Vijayanagara, Bangalore. The building  has been designed to create space  for the children to grow  freely  . A nursery room  for children to  play will have walls  to scribble  and floors to dance.  The school  is a co- educational institution recognized by the government of Karnataka and proposes to have classes from nursery to the twelfth standard. This year,  admissions are open for  the Preparatory,  L.K.G., U.K.G. and First Standard.  The school was formally inaugurated by  His Holiness Sri Ragaveshwara  Bharathi Swamiji on  the 15th of May,2002 and  a grand “Vidyaramba” ceremony will be held at the school premises on   22nd June, 2002.  The  school in short will be a child-centered and child-friendly institution which will prepare the younger generation to meet the challenges of life and career in this globalized world and yet be strongly rooted in our rich Indian cultural and spiritual heritage.
